You know who he is and you’ve seen his TV show. You’ve probably seen him eat elephant dung, drink his own urine, crawl inside a camel caucus, or at the very least, keep Will Ferrel alive in the arctic. There’s only one man on earth who fits such a description: Man vs. Wild’s Bear Grylls.
The ex-member of the British Special Forces knows a thing or two about surviving in the wild, and since 2012 he’s been sharing his knowledge with fellow Brits through his Bear Grylls Survival Academy courses in the United Kingdom.
But now it’s America’s turn to learn about building emergency shelters, foraging for grubs, knife skills, extreme weather survival and dealing with remote medical trauma. Starting this month (June 2014), the Bear Grylls Survival Academy will launch courses in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains, Colorado’s Rocky Mountains and New York’s Catskill Mountains.
First things first: Bear will not be there. What’d you expect? He’s a busy guy. But don’t worry, the expert survival guides who will usher you through the wilderness were handpicked by Bear himself, so you’ll be in good hands.
Academy locations in Colorado and New York offer a 24-hour adult program for a crash course in wilderness survival. But if you really want to put yourself to the test and make Bear proud, you’ll want to go for the intensive 5-day survival courses offered in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains and New York’s Catskill Mountains.
Each course, which is capped at a maximum of 10 people and lead by a team of experts who work on a number of Bear’s shows (Man vs Wild/Born Survivor/Escape From Hell/Get Out Alive) will put you through rigorous survival training and culminate in a challenging 36-hour expedition.
After you complete the course, casual camping trips with your friends will never be the same.
*New pricing is in effect (not yet noted on the Bear Grylls Survival Academy website)
24-hour adult courses in Colorado and New York: $399 per person
5-day courses in New York and California: $2,199 per person
24-hour family courses in California, Colorado and New York: $598 for two people
Want Something Crazier?
If you think the American wilderness is too tame and lacking enough lions to suit your taste, the Bear Grylls Survival Academy launched it’s first course in Africa in January 2014. Located just 10 minutes from Victoria Falls on the Stanley & Livingstone Private Game Reserve in Zimbabwe, your survival skills will be put to the test both on land and water. Expect to make camp amongst the big 5 (Rhino, Buffalo, Lion, Leopard and Elephant), set traps, snares and fishing lines to catch food, and white water raft down the Zambezi River (Price: $3,038).
Yeah, maybe you should start in America and work your way up to the big leagues.
