When it comes to working from the road or simply carrying all the gear needed to live both your real and digital life to the fullest, not every backpack is created equal.
While most backpacks now-a-days feature a laptop sleeve, oftentimes, that’s simply not enough. You need space for chargers, cables, a camera, a tablet — as well as your other go-to travel essentials.
Enter Standard Luggage Co.’s Daily Backpack. This stylish and professional pack, suited for use from the airport to the office, offers all the storage you’ll need while remaining compact and streamlined. It even has a few surprises up its sleeve (i.e. a beautifully integrated USB port for charging your devices on the go).
To test it out, I brought mine with me while flying from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City, Utah, for a weekend ski trip in Park City. The verdict: whether for business or pleasure, this backpack will be coming with me on many more trips.
Basics + Exterior: Upon first glance at Standard Luggage Co.’s Daily Backpack, it’s clear this bag has been painstakingly designed for both function and beauty. And knowing just how many storages spaces and features it has makes the pack’s tight, streamlined and professional appearance all the more impressive. With no unnecessary bulk, frivolous design elements or hanging straps, it’s a backpack you can be proud to travel with (whether that’s across the globe to to and from your office).
On the outside, you’ll find a durable, anti-rip, water resistant fabric and high quality zippers, snap hooks and buckles from YKK. You’ll also find a sleek, collapsible water bottle sleeve that is discreet when when not in use, a small RFID-secure pocket to store sensitive items like your passport and credit cards, and two additional pockets — one at the front and another hidden on the bottom.
Lastly, a luggage sleeve along the back allows the pack to easily slip over the handle of a rolling suitcase — a feature I always appreciate when I fly.
Versatility: The Daily Backpack can be transported three different ways: as a backpack, a messenger bag, and as a suitcase.
Oftentimes, bags that transform to suit different usage scenarios skimp on the details and quality of the non-primary carry modes. So, you’ll find unpadded backpack straps that and don’t hide away seamlessly or flimsy messenger/duffle straps that look and feel like an after thought.
None of this is true with the Standard Luggage Co.’s Daily Backpack, where ever mode of carry feels like the bag’s native state. The backpack straps are comfortable and hide away perfectly (so much so that I had a little trouble finding them when first exploring the pack), the adjustable messenger strap is plush and high-quality, and the side carry handle is sturdy, substantial and easy to grip.
Interior + Standout Features: The Daily Backpack features a multitude of handy interior storage spaces, both in the pack’s front pocket and main compartment, which opens like a traditional suitcase for easy packing and access to your items.
The front compartment features two zippered pockets and three sleeves perfect for documents, journals, chargers, pens and other loose items. This is also where you can store your personal power bank and connect it seamlessly to the pack’s integrated charging port on the bag’s exterior (the cord, seen in the photo above, connects to your power bank and draws that power to the exterior port so you can keep your power bank packed away and charge on-the-go).
In the main compartment, there’s a padded laptop sleeve, another padded sleeve perfect for a tablet, and small zippered pocket for valuables. Two more pockets are ideally suited for carrying a DSLR and lens. Of course, you’ll still have space for more travel essentials — while flying to and from Utah, I used the main compartment to carry an extra flannel, Bose headphones in carrying case, my toiletry bag, snacks, and a few other odds and ends.
