ARCHIVE: DINNER IN KUWAIT CITY

Year: 2008

I looked up. Just above the crowded outdoor marketplace where I sat were strands of lights and a water misting system that struggled to cool the air. After all, when it’s 110° Fahrenheit (43° Celsius) during the day, the heat tends to linger into the night.

I looked around. I was the only person who looked like me. I watched the city residents: men, children, and women (some covered from head to toe in black burqas) as they went about their lives. This was my first time in the Middle East and everything was so new, unusual, and exciting.

I looked down. Laid out on the table in front of me was a colorful, fresh feast sourced from the surrounding food stalls. I knew right then and there, even before tasting the hummus, vegetables and spiced meats, that this would become one of my most memorable travel meals.

I listened. The buzz of the marketplace was overpowered by the day’s last Adhan (the call to prayer) which boomed from the loud speakers attached to the mosque a few feet away.

I ate.

Since I don’t think I’ll write any more Travel Archive posts on Kuwait, I’ll share with you more of my photos from that trip right now.

About Travel Archive:

I’ve been a traveling man for a while now, but I haven’t always been a blogging man. So, I’d like to go back into my archive (my computer and old hard drives) to relive with you some of my favorite travel moments that I haven’t been able to share until now.

Archive posts feature a photo or video along with a brief fragment of a story or memory brought back by the visual. As I continue to pull from the archive, posts may start aligning and thus reveal more of the full story behind the pictures.
