The backpack. You’ve been carrying one since kindergarten — and now, even in your post schooling and post budget backpacker years, chances are you still have a few laying around.
Personally, I have a backpack with me more than I don’t have a backpack with me. Whether I’m going to the gym, hiking, skiing, on a road trip, on a plane, or just anywhere with my laptop, you can bet I’m wearing one.
Needless to say, I’ve acquired many backpacks over the year. Most are rugged and technical, some are best suited for the beach, and others a little more refined for casual use. Still, I’ve never owned a “grown up” backpack. You know, a nice one. One with ample style. One for adults.
Korakia Pensione: My favorite place to stay in Palm Springs, Korakia is a boutique hotel near the heart of town. Separated into a Moroccan section and a Mediterranean section (located across the street from each other), the hotel offers a small selection of rooms full of character, charm, and antique furnishings. The New York Times has called Korakia, “one of the sexiest hotels in America” — which I second. At night, the property is dark and lit with candles and lanterns, the pools are heated to 93 degrees in the winter, and powerful fire pits abound. All this on top of the fact that the hotel’s architecture, design and overall vibe make you feel transported to another country.
Oh, and they have a “no kids allowed” policy, meaning it’s quiet, sophisticated, and populated by adults (clearly the right place to bring my new Metro Waxed Backpack – more on that below).

Seen Here: My Boarding Pass NYC Metro Waxed Backpack with my Boarding Pass NYC Voyager Waxed Weekender, both in ”charcoal.” In the year+ I’ve owned the weekender, I’ve taken it on countless trips — and whenever I need a “grown up” duffle, it’s my #1 go-to.
Basics + Exterior: First things first, and as you can tell from the photos above, this backpack is good looking.
Off the bat you notice the leather detailing, which is sourced from one of America’s oldest tanneries. Among them are the soft harness straps at the top (which allow the pack to be easily carried when not being worn) and the bottom half of the adjustable back straps. Quality brass hardware and brass YKK zippers are the icing that finishes the pack with a sophisticated look.
The rest of the exterior is made of super durable 10.10 oz Martexin Original Waxed canvas, which is waterproof and re-waxable (the backpack comes with a free tin of Martexin wax which Boarding Pass NYC recommends you apply to the pack once a year).
Interior: Inside, the pack is lined with a durable cotton twill. It features a large, full-zip, internal pocket with an 11.93 liter capacity, as well as an additional zippered pocket along the interior front panel perfectly suited for valuables like a wallet or passport. Along the back panel, you’ll find a padded laptop sleeve, as well as another sleeve for a pen and smartphone.
In other words, it has everything the stylish, minimalist traveler needs and nothing they don’t.
Dimensions: approximately 13 inches length, 16 inch height and 3.5 inch width (33 cm x 40.64 x 8.89 cm)
Bottom line: If it’s stylish and streamlined backpack you’re after — one you can take from work, to the skies as a carry-on for your essentials, to a grown-up weekend away — Boarding Pass NYC’s Metro Waxed Backpack will not disappoint.
